Abstract This paper presents a study on improvement of IEC 61850-based substation restoration scheme for minimizing outage area in case of breaker failure. It utilizes voltage, current, and contact information of each circuit breaker and disconnect switch of transmission line and bus. In the event of a fault on a transmission line or a transformer or a bus, the IEC 61850-based substation restoration scheme for minimizing outage area proposed in this paper is explained, assuming that a breaker failure of a line or transformer has occurred, and the bus breakers are fully opened.
