Abstract This paper proposes a protection strategy for multi-terminal medium voltage direct current distribution networks configured with fault-handling converters. While MVDC distribution networks provide an effective way to interconnect DC based distributed generations or loads, their power semiconductor switch based converters are susceptible to overcurrent from the DC fault. To address this challenge, this study introduces fault-handling converters capable of controlling or tolerating DC fault characteristics, and proposes corresponding protection schemes for line and busbar faults. The EMT simulations using Simulink with Simscape Electrical Toolbox are performed to verify the feasibility of the proposed strategy.
