Abstract Current trends in autonomous vehicles rely not only on GPS positioning systems, but other sensor-based systems, because general GPS cannot provide high-precision positioning capabilities. With the rapid spread of LEDs, the lighting infrastructure on the road is being replaced by LEDs and the fast switching function of the LED leads to the active research on visible light communications (VLC). This paper proposes a farthest point selection-based positioning technique which can estimate the vehicle position accurately from the captured image containing visible light data. When the absolute coordinates of multiple light sources are received, the three light sources with the longest distance between LEDs are selected and applied to the collinearity conditions for vehicle positioning.
The simulation results proved that the farthest point selection-based approach can provide high-precision positioning performance even if the distance from the light source is large or low resolution camera is used.
